Day 1: CHINCHERO-MORAY-SALINERAS -OLLANTAYTAMBO
This full-day tour is definitely more than just a tour. It is an awesome and unforgettable adventure, full of diverse activities during which no one can get bored! Today you will explore Inca archeological spots situated near Cusco, unique salt mines at Maras and mystical agricultural terraces, as well as having an interesting lesson of textiles and meeting members of the local community. You will be positively surprised at how many things there are to do and explore in just one day, as well as by how rich an experience of history, culture and tradition you will enjoy!
We will start the tour at 6:30 am in Cusco. It will take around 45 minutes to reach our first spot, Chinchero town, where we will visit the Inca ruins and particpate in a workshop about the local textiles of the region.
After Chinchero, we move on to explore the archaeological site of Moray which contains unusual Inca ruins, consisting of several enormous terraced circular depressions.
From Moray we continue on to our next destination – Maras. Here we will learn about the production of the popular Andean beverage, chicha de jora (corn beer) and take some time to stroll through the truly beautiful streets of this Andean settlement.
Salineras de Maras
After Maras we continue the tour towards the incredible salt ponds, Salineras de Maras, which have been in use since Inca times. We will go there on foot, following an easy and relaxing hour-long trail during which we will have some spectacular views of the Cordillera Uubamba. In the salt mines you will have a chance to walk through more than 3000 salt ponds, learn about the production of salt and see how Inca practices and traditions are still employed today.
We arrive in Ollantaytambo at approximately 4pm. Here we explore our final Inca site of the day. Ollantaytambo´s ruins, built in the shape of a llama, are some of the most impressive in the region. The beauty of the sites that we visit on this day is that they all differ greatly from each other, giving us a great overview of varying styles of ancient architecture.
After short walk around the ruins and a stroll through the most spectacular parts of the town, you will take the train to Aguas Calientes, where you will have time to rest before exploring Machu Picchu the following day.
Days 2: MACHU PICCHU
During this day you will have possibility to explore Machu Picchu from many diferent points. Inside the ruins there are many options available to you. You can hike one of the two small peaks, Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, or walk to the Sun Gate (Inti Punku) and/or Inca bridge.
You will start the tour from Aguas Calientes where, early in the morning, you will take a bus to the site´s entrance. In the ruins you will have a 2 hour guided tour, giving an overview of the history and culture of the Inca Empire and the spiritual, political and educational importance of Machu Picchu. After the tour you will have time to explore the site independently until 5pm – although you have the option to leave earlier if you wish.
You will make your own way back to Aguas Calientes via bus, from where you will take a train to Ollantaytambo. In Ollantaytambo our bus wil be waiting to transfer you back to Cusco, where you will arrive at around 22:30.
